An article posted in a magazine that reads "More women are breast feeding their toddlers." The picture is something that one would not imagine to see in a magazine. A mother sitting at a park bench leaning over to allow her what looks to be 4 or 5 year old daughter to feed from her right breast. I wouldn't say the picture is revealing more than it was disturbing to see a child who could stand on her own while holding a banana is still being breast feed. I think the main purpose of this picture is to point out that it is becoming more and more appropriate to breast feed at later and later ages. I feel the audience of the image is mainly mothers.
Logos – apparently the breast milk is healthy, which is what the text implies by “outstandingly healthy”. Ethos – The article comes from a credible magazine. And in the article it quotes credible professors form numerous colleges who support toddler breast feeding. Pathos- Our society had made breast so highly signalized that this is shocking. Also, the fact that the child also has a solid food in one hand also makes the argument controversial with many believing that the child is too old to breast feed if she can eat a banana
I feel if i were a mother and wanted the best for my child i would consider the length in with i breast feed her. The arguments looks successful but in the end to whom ever see it and are not mothers they become uncomfortable and find them selves against toddler breastfeeding.
This is also a large social issue because our society does not condone breastfeeding in public and much less breast feeding a child that could be enrolled in kindergarten. It makes people chose between what some mothers believe to be extremely healthy for their children and what society thinks is acceptable.
hey shawna! i think you did a great job analysing this piece! you used a lot of the things that we as a group discussed in class and wrote it out really well! i would be sure to pay careful attention to the pathos shock value and also really really focus on the societal ethical views versus the ethical helath issues. I know youre thinking about doing this for your unit two topic and i think you are off to a great start!
ReplyDeleteShawna,
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tassie's idea of the pathos. This ad definitely gets the viewer's attention quickly. It sounds like you have a full grasp of how to reduce and analyze pieces of discourse. You effectively broke this picture down and extracted the conflicts of society and healthy child-rearing practices. You also successfully presented a brief abstract of each side of the argument without appearing too bias. Great work
Shawna,
ReplyDeleteyou did a really good job of analyzing this picture. I had no idea mothers were still breastfeeding their toddlers. To me, when I first saw the picture I thought the article would be about not letting your toddler breast feed just because the picture did not look normal or appropriate, when mothers breastfeed they usually do it privately or put a blanket over themselves. That's interesting it's actually healthy. overall good job!
I agree. You did great on this. The pure shock value is almost humorous. The only I might twist about your analysis is trying to incorporate Ethos, Pathos and Logos into a sentence that subtly gets your point across using these concepts. For example, this picture can be upsetting..... or things like that
ReplyDeleteI have to be honest, this picture is somewhat disturbing! I really like how you didn't explain why it's wrong for the mother breastfeeding her toddler in public but how it's good for the toddler to keep receiving their mothers breastmilk. LOVE IT! It is very healthy for the child because this is how the child receives their immune system and to me, the more the merrier! I really like what you picked for your unit 2 paper and I really like your approach to this picture.
ReplyDeleteGood Job!!!
Shawna-
ReplyDeleteI concur that the picture is somewhat disturbing. I think that you are on the right track to understanding the rhetorical analysis. I also think you did a good job of incorporating your pathos, ethos, and logos, although rather bluntly it was still effective.

p.s. it was good to see you outside of Fuzzy's Tuesday night.
Shawna,
ReplyDeleteI cry out a little every time I see this picture because it's unsuspecting and so unique in nature. Yeah, this is definitely an interesting post and very controversial in nature. I think this is an amazing post and can't wait to see more from you!

WHOA!
ReplyDeleteSo you mentioned that you think the argument is pretty sound, but i think it would be helpful to elaborate more on this part. It's intersting to hear different people's opinions this ad. Personally, it sort of shocked me. But i guess it's unfair to think breasts are weird when they arn't sexualized. Talking about more of this will help with the larger contex of the argument.
